The FSBDC Network is one of eight original SBDC pilot programs funded in 1976 by the U.S. Small Business Administration to successfully link the state's education system to community outreach, utilizing both faculty and students to aid in the development and education of the state's entrepreneurs and small business community. Today, the FSBDC is a statewide network of 29 centers involving seven of ten SUS institutions, seven community colleges, two Chambers of Commerce and one county Economic Development Council. Additional outreach is provided at approximately 60 circuit rider locations, utilizing resource partners such as chambers of commerce, economic development councils, banks, etc.
 

Engaging Students in
Real-World Business Experiences

The SBDC at Miami Dade Community College presented "How to Start Your Own Business" training to students in the Entrepreneurial program at MDCC Kendall Campus and continues to provide support to these students through one-on-one counseling regarding their business plan.
The Small Business Institute class, an elective in the College of Business Administration graduate program at UNF, had 17 students enrolled. The 17 UNF SBDC businesses counseled through the program received 2,035 hours of assistance.
The UNF SBDC offered part-time employment opportunities to two new COBA students this semester, both international students pursuing an MBA.
The UNF SBDC continued to employ two additional students, one to staff the SBDC Help Desk and one to assist with small business training programs.
USF SBDC MBA student, Daniel Scott, has redeveloped the SBDC web site making it more user-friendly and designing it in accordance with USF policies on color and design while also making it more informative and facile to use. Mr. Scott has worked hard to redesign the SBDC marketing questionnaire provided to clients to help improve measurement systems.
Several USF SBDC clients were recommended and chosen for the Integrated Business Application class given at the USF/College of Business. This is the capstone class for the MBA program. Five student teams will be working with USF SBDC clients during the next two semesters.
Each semester, FAU SBDC volunteer business analyst, Robert Keltie, who also is the assistant director of the Adams Center for IT Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital and entrepreneurship instructor in the College of Business, matches student teams in his class with real businesses to work on a mutually agreed upon project. FAU SBDC certified business analyst, Suzanne Mulvehill was able to link an SBDC client with the Center, which is housed in the College of Business. This introduction will afford students within the Entrepreneurship Program the opportunity to conduct a marketing research study with the goal of expanding the client's product line.

Providing Educational Programs
that Inspire Creative Learning

The USF SBDC has added a new workshop on "Advertising Your Business". Response indicated this monthly class is already popular.
The USF SBDC has partnered with a local company, Paychex, to present seminars on human resources and payroll questions for small business owners.
Interesting new topics offered by the FAU SBDC included a program targeting women business owners, which discussed government opportunities for women entrepreneurs, financing programs through the SBA as well as private loans, resources for women, and marketing opportunities in the areas of technology, hospitality, retail, aviation, health, utilities, real estate, financing, and international trade.
The FAU SBDC offered an exciting marketing program, which was held at the City Hall in Fort Lauderdale, and attracted more than 40 attendees. The speaker, Jeff Zbar, of Goin' SOHO, gave a dynamic presentation of guerrilla marketing to the participants, many of whom stayed after the program ended to network and to learn more about SBDC programs.

Partnering with the Community to
Promote Economic Development

In November 2001, the Gulf Coast Community College SBDC, in cooperation with Enterprise Florida, the FSBDC Network, representatives from SBA's North Florida District Office and the Governor's Office hosted an SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan Workshop. Several local business owners attended the workshop. Among them was Ms. Lisa Strickland, owner of Xtremely Board, Inc. in Lynn Haven, FL. The following week, GCCC SBDC certified business analyst Tony Zacchio attended SBA Disaster Loan Training at the SBA District Office in Atlanta, GA. Upon Tony's return, Ms. Strickland called for an appointment for assistance in preparing her SBA Disaster loan application. Shortly after submission, Ms. Strickland's application was approved.
In late February, the GCCC SBDC partnered with the Panama City Downtown Improvement Board to offer the seminar "Creating A Destination Business." Over thirty entrepreneurs took advantage of the opportunity to learn marketing and small business strategies to draw in customers from other locations in the region.
In February, the GCCC SBDC hosted the Bay County Chamber of Commerce's Existing Industry Committee meeting. Those present included Doug Davis, Dr. Jeff Stevenson, Christine Davis (GCCC Coordinator of Business and Industry Training), as well as over twenty business leaders. The committee toured the facility and discussed ways to meet the needs of the small business manufacturer.
The SBDC at MDCC has partnered with Saint John Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization, to offer economic development services in the overtown area of Miami. The services include technical advice to existing businesses and workshops for existing and pre-venture businesses.
The SBDC at MDCC sits on the advisory board of the "Things are Cooking in Overtown" charity event that collects funds for economic development of the overtown community.
The Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Melbourne/Palm Bay Area Chamber of Commerce offered facilities to the Brevard Community College SBDC to conduct roundtables on SOHO (Small Owned-Home Owned Business) in January.
The FAU SBDC co-sponsored a full-day program with Broward Alliance, the Fort Lauderdale Enterprise Zone, and the Governor's Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development. The program was designed to create awareness and promote the revitalization of the city of Fort Lauderdale's Enterprise Zone and Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) through active exposure to resources required for successful redevelopment.
FAU SBDC staff members attended a meeting at the Jupiter Tequesta Chamber of Commerce for a needs assessment for 2002 classes. Nine local business owners were in attendance. It was decided that the class titled "Start your Own Business," and the new human resources class titled "Hiring, Training and Keeping the Best Employees" will be taught in 2002.
FAU SBDC director, Nancy Young participated in an Economic Development Retreat, together with other economic development organizations in Palm Beach County. Nancy offered several suggestions for improved cooperation and growth.
Irene Hurst, USF SBDC director, served as a judge for the Small Business of the Year awards with the Tampa Chamber of Commerce.

Collaborating to Educate and Increase
Opportunities for Diversity

In January 2002, the FGCU SBDC and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce partnered to sponsor the Small Business Loans and SBA Lending seminar. This is the first of many seminars designed to assist Hispanic and non-Hispanic small businesses improve their business practices as well as to help them grow. At the conclusion of the seminar, a certificate of participation was presented to each attendee.
Brevard Community College Regional SBDC is working in conjunction with the National Minority Supplier Development Council and Brevard Small Business Council to offer a special program on Disaster Planning. This has been a focus area for NMSDC prompted by September 11. This Disaster Planning program took place March 14 at the Imperial Hotel. Two of Brevard SBDC's volunteer business analysts spoke at the program: Wallace Weeks and Greg Spencer. They offered their expertise on finance and insurance.
The USF SBDC assisted minority applicants with the application process for business certification.
The USF SBDC taught "How to Start Your Own Business" at Erwin Technical Center in Tampa.
The USF SBDC addressed the Hotel and Motel Owners Association.
Jim Parrish, USF SBDC counselor, represented the SBDC at a one-day conference at the main branch of the Hillsborough County Library.
FAU SBDC certified business analyst, Rafael Cruz attended the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce Dade Business Conference. The keynote speaker was Mr. Ramon Cantero-Frau, secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of Puerto Rico. During the conference, Rafael had the opportunity to network and advocate for the local SBDC program and its services. Rafael also met with Frank Nieves, president of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce and their executive director to discuss the services of the SBDC and SBRC, and how the FAU SBDC can partner on activities that benefit both organizations. They also discussed Rafael joining the Board of Directors as vice president, which was approved.
FAU SBDC certified business analyst, Ondria Merriweather-Brown, continues to advocate for minority and women-owned small businesses in the South Florida area. She attended the "Broward Hospital Minority / Women Business Enterprise Expo," "Broward County Chambers Network Expo" and the "City of Lauderhill Business-To-Business Trade Exposition," as a SBDC representative. At the Expos, various business owners and government officials were present to bring business and local government together.

Capitalizing on Expertise and Strengths
to Enhance Community Outreach Efforts

The USF SBDC Public Relations and Marketing director, Judy Gray, has helped spread the word about SBDC services through her membership in several professional organizations and by meeting with community leaders and service organizations this winter.
FAU SBDC certified business analyst, Carole Hart, attended the Women in Business Conference in West Palm Beach. Issues discussed were time management, stresses of small business owners and other business issues. This meeting presented a great opportunity to meet several women business owners in Palm Beach County and tell them about the SBDC and the resources available to them.
FAU SBDC associate director Jack Hudson and director Nancy Young were part of a planning committee that included the SBDC, City of Fort Lauderdale Enterprise Zone Department and the Broward Alliance. The group prepared and implemented a business conference that focused on available financial resources for small business growth. The "Tools for Growth" conference was held at the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and featured organizations such as SBA, HUD, Fannie Mae and several major banking institutions.
In an effort to reach those Brevard businesses interested in expanding markets to government contracting, Brevard Community College Regional Small Business Development Center offered Government Contracting Basics on January 31, 2002. Two SBDC presenters facilitated the discussion. They are Fred Orlando of Orlando and Associates and Ned Buffington, business development and capital strategy consultant.
GCCC SBDC CBA Andre Brewton traveled to Okaloosa Walton Community College in the month of December for training on the new tax laws affecting small businesses.

Increasing Visibility & Awareness
in the Community

The FSBDC Network hosted the Third Annual Product Exposition, Luncheon and Reception: A Capitol-Business Experience on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, on the 22nd Floor of The Capitol, in Tallahassee. More than 20 successful entrepreneurs from Pensacola to Key West traveled to Tallahassee to participate in this extraordinary event. An additional 22 companies were represented at the Exposition by providing products for their local SBDC to display. Dr. Morris Marx, President of the University of West Florida (FSBDC host institution); Paul Ledford, Executive Vice President of the Florida Chamber of Commerce; and FSBDC State Director Jerry Cartwright presented the 2002 Small Business Dividend$ Award to Senator Charlie Clary and Representative Leslie Waters for their exceptional support of initiatives that promote the success of small business.
The FSBDC Network hosted the Third Annual Capitol-Business Briefing & Reception at the Florida House in Washington, D.C. on March 20. At this event, the FSBDC presents an annual Dividend$ Award to a member of Florida’s Congressional delegation, recognizing their efforts at the federal level to improve the prospects of business success. The 2002 award recipient is Congressman C. W. “Bill” Young. SBDC Directors from the University of West Florida, Gulf Coast Community College, Florida A&M University, University of North Florida, University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and Florida Atlantic University represented the FSBDC Network at the Briefing & Reception. This year, the FSBDC expanded the invitation list to include key representatives from partner organizations including the SBA, the SBA's Office of International Trade, the SBA's Office of Veteran's Affairs, the US Department of Labor, Association of Small Business Development Centers and the State University System of Florida. A University of South Florida SBDC client, and small business constituent from Congressman Bill Young's district, traveled from Tampa to support the SBDC.
The USF SBDC expanded its newsletter mailing list and revised the database to reach out beyond its existing client base.
The USF SBDC submitted four applicants for the SBA awards for 2001 and are anxiously awaiting a reply.
Through an intensive 12-month redesign of brochures, slogans, branding and target marketing, the USF SBDC has increased awareness of the SBDC and class participation in the various small business workshops and seminars offered by the SBDC.
The USF SBDC was awarded the 2001 Excellence in Public Relations Award from the Public Relations Society of America, Tampa Bay Chapter. The College of Business dean requested the SBDC prepare an article on the SBDC's efforts and results for the college's Alumni Executive Newsletter.
Doug Davis (GCCC SBDC Director), Angela Burnes (Veterans Business Outreach Center Director), Tony Zacchio (GCCC SBDC Certified Business Analyst), and Dr. Jeff Stevenson (GCCC Dean of Workforce Development) attended the Third Annual Product Exposition, Luncheon and Reception in Tallahassee. Ray Bentz of Fiber Blo, a GCCC SBDC client and Incubator tenant, was also in attendance. GCCC SBDC clients Premier Brush and Jerry Mills Custom Caps sent promotional items and information about their firms for display.
The FAU SBDC cosponsored the last three of a series of seminars with Gateway Country Stores. The first, "Connecting Your Business: Planning Your Office Network" was held in Plantation; followed by "Technology Requirements for your Growing Business," held in Boca Raton. In Miami-Dade County, a program about new and upcoming PC technology requirements discussed current trends shaping PC technology, key benefits of performance technology, and key elements of technology. These cosponsored seminars were presented by various Gateway staff and took place at Gateway stores.
The FAU SBDC Festival Plaza location implemented a new marketing initiative to promote training programs. Seminar "Connection" schedules were sent to distribution sites each month and the response has been excellent. Resource development has resulted from this tool; most sites want to work with the SBDC in the future.
Roy Valdes and Victoria Peake (Brevard Community College SBDC director) were active presenters at Patrick Air Force Base's Transition Assistance Program, as well as the Family Support Center brown bag luncheons.
In December, the Bay County Small Business Incubator, GCCC Small Business Development Center, and the Veterans Business Outreach Center hosted the 3rd Annual Holiday Open House. The attendees included local and state dignitaries, as well as US Congressman Allen Boyd and Congressional Aide Jerry Smithwick.
Brevard Community College Regional SBDC held its first Veterans Conference in November at the King Center for Performing Arts in Melbourne. Keynote speaker was Scott Denniston, Director of the Center for Veterans Enterprise in Washington, D. C. Also, attending from Washington was Lieutenant Colonel James C. Lloyd, Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, Department of the Army. US Small Business Administration representatives who spoke and counseled included: Ron Ammerman, Florida North District Office in Jacksonville; Walt Wallace, SBA Procurement Assistance, Orlando; and Gary Davisson, SBA Disaster Area 2 Office, Atlanta. Doug Davis and Angela Burnes from the Gulf Coast Community College SBDC in Lynn Haven, spoke to the group about the Veterans Business Outreach Center. Special counsel in government contracting was provided by Gloria Marsh, NASA Industry Assistance Council; Terry Pinkelton, Sverdrup and Space Coast President National Minority Supplier Development Council and Linda Sherod, Chief, Small Business Office, 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base. BCC SBDC Success Stories were a highlight of the program.

Securing Support to
Expand Outreach to the Community

The Brevard Community College Regional SBDC director met with representatives from the Cocoa Business Incubator to discuss collaborative efforts for start-up businesses.
The USF SBDC works closely with the Pinellas County Economic Development Office, the Hillsborough County Small Business Information Center and has been included in the Tampa Housing Toolkit for Economic Development state grant application.
The USF SBDC opened a full-service center in Sarasota County in partnership with the Manatee Community College.
FAU SBDC certified business analyst Martin Zients met with representatives from Fidelity Federal, Wachovia Bank and Union Planters Bank to discuss small business banking and how they can work together on SBA loans. They agreed to work on funding the Pre-Qualification Loans and also to refer their clients to the SBDC for assistance.
FAU SBDC director Nancy Young and associate director Lois Goldberger prepared and submitted a proposal to the City of Lauderhill for funding to provide counseling and training to city residents and business owners. A response is expected later in 2002.

Leveraging Expertise to
Accelerate Knowledge

Janice Donaldson, recently appointed as UNF SBDC director, received her MBA in December 2001.
As a professional development service and to keep staff current on important events that could affect SBDC business counseling and training, the FAU SBDC started a daily business news report that is e-mailed each morning throughout the FAU SBDC network. The daily business summary is compiled from business-related news gleaned from local newspapers, including the Sun Sentinel, Palm Beach Post, and South Florida Business Journal. This summary is then e-mailed to all employees of the SBDC/FAU and its branch offices. Subscriptions to publications such as NewsWeek, the Economist, etc. are expected in 2002, and will be included in future daily summaries. The service has been well-received by staff.
USF SBDC director Irene Hurst traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for disaster loan application training. As a result of the training, she was able to help seven Florida business owners apply for assistance. Three applications have been approved.
USF SBDC director Irene Hurst met with Representative Ken Littlefield, Representative Sarah Romeo and Senator Tom Lee in an effort to keep them abreast of the SBDC's ongoing community efforts.
The Brevard Community College SBDC, in conjunction with the Florida/NASA Incubator, will feature Yasmin Tirado-Chiodini, Esq., at a special free program on Business Intelligence and Information Security. The workshop is designed to enhance an organization's competitive advantage in government and commercial markets. The program will empower the attendees by: providing business research strategy frameworks; providing numerous sources of business and other information; presenting information security approaches to eliminate information vulnerabilities; reviewing legal frameworks relevant to business intelligence and information security.

Fostering the Development of
Global Relations

Discussions were held between the FAU SBDC, the Palm Beach County's Office of Small Business Assistance (OSBA), and the Port of Palm Beach to review existing strategies and to determine innovative approaches for international trade seminars that will be sponsored by OSBA and hosted by the Port of Palm Beach. Titles for these seminars were also discussed with the intent of deciding upon the countries that should be targeted in the interest of growth and development of small businesses in the Palm Beach County. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that seminars should address trade with the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico.
The FAU SBDC, through its on-going partnership relations with Enterprise Florida, informed its clients via e-mail of an inbound business delegation that was visiting South Florida with the objective of meeting with business owners who were desirous of conducting trade with South African businesses. This action resulted in numerous calls from clients who expressed an interest in actually meeting with members of the business delegation. Approximately 20 business owners interested in doing business with South Africa were provided with relevant information so that they could schedule appointments to meet with members of the business delegation.
The Florida SBDC Network has entered into a partnership agreement titled the Gulf Coast States Economic and Educational Consortium. Partners included in this consortium currently consist of the Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida; Universidad Autónoma del Carmen; Universidad Tecnológica de Tabasco; Universidad Modelo; Secretaria de Desarrollo Industrial y Comercial, Yucatan; CRECE, Yucatan; Desarrollo Empresarial de Campeche A.C.; Cámara Nactional de la Industria de Transformación, Yucatán; BancoMext; COPARMEX; Insituto Yucateco de Calidad; Universidad de Quintana Roo; and the Florida Small Business Development Center Network.. The Merida Institute of Technology has been identified as the lead contact and has assigned a full time staff person to work with the FSBDC. While the FSBDC has had a five-year relationship with the Merida Institute of Technology, the intent of this agreement is to enhance and strengthen the current association to form a greater strategic alliance through a consortium of the above identified partners within the Southeast region of Mexico to promote an environment whereby small and medium enterprises are afforded opportunities for increased business-to-business development, business education and training, cultural awareness, and student/faculty exchange with the State of Florida. To this end, the Mexican partners agree to participate in the integration and development of a Mexican Consortium to support the small and medium businesses in the states of Yucatan, Campeche, and Tabasco. This participation will have as its objective to seek the sustainable social and economic development of the region.

The newly formed Gulf Coast States Economic & Educational Consortium (GCSEEC) held their second meeting in conjunction with the Gulf of Mexico States Accord (GOMSA) in Veracruz, Mexico. This consortium has as its goal to participate in the integration and development of a business assistance program to support the small and medium sized businesses in the partner states. Along those lines, the Consortium made a presentation to the GOMSA Education and Culture Working Group asking them to acknowledge and support the Consortium as a viable economic development and education project. There was unanimous approval for this request. In addition, the Universidad Veracruzana joined the list of consortium partners at the GOMSA meeting, expanding this list of development partners.
USF SBDC assistant director Eileen Rodriguez went to Mexico in November as part of the Florida Small Business Development Center Network to assist that country in establishing an SBDC of their own. She also helped translate and teach while at the conference. That same month, Eileen also traveled to the University of Wisconsin to teach the Going Global class to students, at the request of that institution.
USF SBDC director Irene Hurst went to Vera Cruz in January as part of an FSBDC/SBA excursion.
Brevard Community College Regional SBDC is active with the Space Coast World Trade Council. Director Victoria Peake sits on the Board of SCWTC and has worked with the Council's Executive Committee to offer Exporting with the Experts in Brevard County. Exporting with the Exports began in January 2002.
BCC SBDC continues to offer Custom House Brokerage and Freight Forwarding training.
BCC SBDC Director Victoria Peake completed the FSBDC Network EXPORT FLORIDA Small Business Export Certification Program and was awarded the designation of International Trade Program Specialist.

Exchanging Ideas and Knowledge
for the Betterment of the Community

Irene Hurst, USF SBDC director, was invited to meet with the President of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). In January, she spoke at the Lakeland chapter of NAWBO's monthly meeting about the Women Executive Forum that provides support to women entrepreneurs in growing their businesses.
The FAU SBDC hosted an event at the SBDC location in the Broward County Main Library's Bank of America Small Business Resource Center. Various small business owners, community leaders and the press attended the event, which coincided with VIVA Broward, a weeklong celebration in Broward County. The SBA gave a presentation on funding and a presentation was made to a group of students who are members of ASPIRA (a national youth leadership organization) and future entrepreneurs.
For the seventh consecutive year, FAU SBDC certified business analyst Marty Zients worked with the Broward County School's DECA program. He counseled the teachers involved in the program as to how their students should present their business plans to achieve success in their annual contest. Zients also reviewed and selected 15 students from a group of 26 applicants, who went before a group of judges in early January 2002.
Brevard Community College Regional SBDC and Pat Bemis, (SBDC client success story) President of the National Nurses in Business Association, offered a free roundtable based on Bemis' experience and expertise with national media. The roundtable is entitled PRESS RELEASE, PUBLIC RELATIONS PRIMER: REACHING OUT TO AND BEYOND YOUR COMMUNITY. Bemis' NNBA can be found on the Internet at www.NNBA.net.

Recognizing and Rewarding
Excellence

Tom Hermanson, certified business analyst at the UWF SBDC, Ft. Walton Beach Office was awarded AIBA Certification. AIBA is the first element in the Institute of Business Appraisers new professional designation: Accredited by IBA ("AIBA"). The AIBA designation recognizes the knowledge gained in 64 hours of business appraisal education; the demonstrated ability of the appraiser in the production of a critiqued, comprehensive report; and the appraiser's commitment to continue professional development by entry in the CBA process. “Overall, the reviewer found his report to be an extremely professional piece of work, well argued and supported. It demonstrated a level of analysis in many areas that seems to go beyond what might be expected for AIBA certification. The reviewer has no hesitation in recommending that this should be passed. It is obvious that the candidate took a considerable amount of care with this report and it reflects well on both his abilities and his standards of writing, proofing, and organization.”
