The FSBDCN is one of eight original national SBDC pilot programs funded in 1976 by the US SBA to successfully link the state's education system to community outreach, utilizing both faculty and students to aid in the development and education of the state’s entrepreneurs and small business community. Today, the FSBDCN is a statewide network of more than 30 centers, involving universities, colleges and other economic development organizations, with additional outreach provided at resource partner locations. |

Student Participation: Education and Reality SBDC at UCF Judges Business Plan Competition SBDC at UCF counselors Roger Greenwald and Gene Romagna evaluated and graded business plans entered in the 3rd Annual Sunshine State Venture Challenge Business Plan Competition held on October 23 and 24 at the Marriott Village in Orlando. The Sunshine State Venture Challenge is intended to build relationships and professional networks among those who provoke new venture creation in the state's campuses and communities. This event engaged students, faculty, business leaders, and government leaders from all regions of the state, and showcased exciting proposals created by high achieving students. The University of Central Florida was one of seven Florida schools to host the event. The event was sponsored by the Florida Venture Forum and the Winter Park Angels. SBDC Staff Participate in University Entrepreneurship Classes SBDC at UNF staff spoke to two undergraduate classes in the Coggin College of Business in the Fall semester, Entrepreneurial Marketing and Planning a New Business, on the basics of starting a business and how the SBDC can help. A presentation was also made to the Entrepreneurship Society. The SBDC at UNF provided the case studies for the Entrepreneurial Marketing class in the Fall semester. Students in the class received real, hands-on experience with actual small business owners in the community. SBDC at USF CBA Jim Parrish taught an Entrepreneurship class (Management 4802) for USF Sarasota during the Fall 2008 semester, and CBA Daniel Scott was a guest speaker for a number of inter-disciplinary, graduate-level entrepreneurship courses. back to top Community Outreach: Initiatives for Expanding, Supporting and Partnering Florida SBDC Network Partners With New Southeastern Regional Hosts With significant state budget cuts in 2008, FAU eliminated it's entire SBDC program, leaving a region from Indian River County to Key West without access to technical assistance and training services. Starting January 5, 2009, the southeastern-most SBDC region is now operating as four separate regions (see map). Palm Beach Community College (PBCC) is hosting the SBDC program in Palm Beach County. Indian River State College (IRSC) is hosting the SBDC in Ft. Pierce and rounding out services in Indian River, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Martin Counties. Interim offices are open in Miami-Dade-Monroe (led by Regional Director Carlos Cardenas) and Broward (led by Regional Director Rafael Cruz); however, new partners are being sought to ensure long-term sustainability of the programs. New Regional SBDCs Develop Partnerships in Their Local Communities Led by Regional Director Donna Rivett, the SBDC at IRSC is working strategically with local Economic Development Agencies and Chambers of Commerce to provide services to small businesses and entrepreneurs on the Treasure Coast, which includes Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties. With the creation of the Research Park in St. Lucie County and the relocation of Torrey Pines Research Institute and other bio-technology companies and start-ups, this area has been renamed the “Research Coast”. The advent of these bio tech companies has brought tremendous growth to the area and provides excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses to start and grow their organizations in support of these up and coming bio tech firms. The SBDC at IRSC partnered with the Business Development Board of Martin County to promote economic growth in Martin County by retaining and assisting businesses; attracting desirable new businesses, while preserving the quality of life; and expanding educational and employment opportunities. The Business Development Board is the official economic development organization for Martin County and operates a comprehensive program. The Board has extensive partnerships with the State of Florida, Chambers of Commerce, communities, agencies and companies to promote and market the Martin County area for investment and job creation. In Palm Beach County, the SBDC at PBCC, led by Regional Director Jacie Keeley, partnered with the College's Corporate and Continuing Education and local stakeholder organizations, including the Palm Beach County Office of Small Business Assistance, to provide counseling and training services in Palm Beach County. The SBDC at PBCC will play a vital role in Palm Beach County by helping small business clients open businesses, create and retain jobs, win contract awards, acquire capital for business formation and expansion, and enjoy higher sales. The SBDC at PBCC is also hosting one of the Florida SBDC Network's Procurement Technical Assistance Centers. Three former SBDC at FAU Procurement Specialists were retained to provide counseling and training assistance to firms preparing to do business with the government. All PBCC campuses are participating in the SBDC program; however, the main office location is on the Boca Raton campus. Orlando Utilities Company Partners with SBDC at UCF for Small Business Incentive The Orlando Utilities Company (OUC) partnered with the SBDC at UCF to offer the OUC’s Small Business Efficiency Pilot program. The program was designed to show small business clients of OUC how to reduce energy and water consumption and improve overall business operations. Clients selected by OUC will receive a $250 credit towards their utility bill after completing an energy survey with the OUC and a one-hour business counseling session with SBDC at UCF. Santa Rosa County Partners With SBDC at UWF to Grow Agriculture Sector In an effort to grow their agriculture sector via a marketing and coordination group called the Panhandle Fresh Marketing Association, Santa Rosa County partnered with the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) group and the SBDC at UWF. The role of the University of Florida’s IFAS group was to support and encourage farmers to provide specialty crops to large box operations like WalMart. After two years of success, the time came to take the project to the next level, which is where the SBDC at UWF came in as a partner. The SBDC helped the team develop a business plan to grow the role, scope and impact of agriculture in Northwest Florida. SBDC at UWF CBAs, Dan Cavanaugh and Janet Etheridge, have spent 15% of their time on the project since mid-2008, with much of the time in the field. The challenge was to get farmers, distributors and retailers together to turn non-farmed acres in the Panhandle into productive vegetable crops. TEAM SANTA ROSA hired a full-time marketing and coordination person to move the project forward. The project has since been expanded to include a ‘value added’ center that would receive, clean, grade, package and distribute products to retail and institutional markets. The retail market includes big box operations, specialty restaurants, specialty and high-end food retailers, etc. Institutional markets include hospitals, prisons, school districts, etc. The 'value added' center has added a major challenge to the project because business planning templates for this type of facility are not readily available; the ‘footprint’ is unique to the variety of specialty products processed, extent of value added processing and proximity to market. The effort is ongoing, and the SBDC is assisting TEAM SANTA ROSA with business plans related to: grant applications to the USDA for doing feasibility studies (surveys); a value added processing center; and new and existing farmer applications to banks for fixed and working capital loans. Business and Financial Literacy Taught to Child Care Center Directors The SBDC at UNF partnered with the Early Learning Coalition to offer business management and financial literacy training to 12 child care center directors. The SBDC provided the business training, while the ELC provided the leadership and child care instruction. SBDCs Extend Outreach Through Partnerships
The SBDC at USF continued its partnership with the USF College of Business – St. Petersburg to offer its monthly Small Business Networking Breakfast. The networking breakfasts are open to small businesses. It draws an average of 40 people each month. back to top Business Education: Motivation, Inspiration & Creativity SBDC CBA In Seventh Year Teaching UWF's E-Business Systems Fundamentals Course SBDC at UWF's Dan Cavanaugh is in his seventh year teaching E-Business Systems Fundamentals, a core course for business majors at UWF. The course addresses important fundamentals of e-business systems found in an increasingly inter-networked world and how these fundamentals support improved e-business processes and decision-making. More than 350 students have benefitted from the course.
SBDC at UNF Held Fourth Annual High School Entrepreneurial Event The SBDC at UNF held its Fourth Annual Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Conference for high school girls interested in starting a business. Sponsors included Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and Regions Bank. Supporters included Junior Achievement, Women Business Owners of North Florida and the Gateway Girl Scout Council. One hundred high school students and 34 women business owners, who served as mentors, participated in the event. SBDC Workshop Targets Seminole County Banking Community The SBDC at Seminole Community College flipped the tables twice during 2008 by offering free educational training exclusively for the local banking community. “Be a Hero to Your Small Business Clients” was offered in a “Lunch and Learn” format. Approximately 35 local banking professionals attended each session that was offered in February, at SCC’s new Heathrow campus, and in November, at its Oviedo campus. Workshop content addressed the current state of the small business economy in Seminole County. The sessions helped attendees develop an understanding that small business had nothing to do with creating the current financial crisis but that they will have a very large role in the economic recovery. Presenters also shared the importance of detecting early warning signs of formerly healthy business clients, and provided tips for how banks could intervene. The program’s main objective was to nurture the SBDC's already strong local banking relationships and maintain active loan activity. “Be a Hero to Your Small Business Clients”, “Lunch and Learn for Bankers”, is currently being expanded for 2009.
