Florida SBDC Network Presents 9th Annual Dividend$ Award
to Congressman Vern Buchanan

L-R: Dr. Arthur Guilford, Congressman Buchanan,
Jerry Cartwright, Eileen Rodriguez
Pensacola, FL: Congressman Vern Buchanan received the 9th Annual Small Business Dividend$ Award on September 21, 2009. Jerry Cartwright, State Director of the Florida SBDC Network (FSBDCN) presented the award at a special event on the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus in Sarasota—Congressman Buchanan’s district. Sponsored by the FSBDCN, the award honors a Floridian whose service to the state has supported legislation vital to Florida’s small business community and its economic success.

“I am honored to receive Florida’s 9th annual SBDC small business award,” said Buchanan.  “Over 70% of the new jobs in this country are created by small business owners.  I will never stop working for the very people who can bring jobs and prosperity back to America,” he added.  Buchanan serves on the House Small Business Committee and is vice-chair of the Finance and Tax Subcommittee, where he has worked diligently to increase the availability of capital to boost the economy and create jobs.  He supported the Economic Growth Act which increased the small business expensing limit and allowed for additional depreciation deductions.

“It is clear through Congressman Buchanan’s past and present actions that he is keenly aware of the importance of small business success as to creating jobs and getting the economy back on track,” said Cartwright.  “Recently he called for the House to pass the ‘Job Creation through Entrepreneurship Act’,” he added.  The Act includes the expansion of the Women Business Centers, SCORE, the SBDCs and other small business support services, and is closely related to his other pro-business votes and congressional work that is well-grounded in his many years as a businessman.

Dr. Arthur Guilford, Regional Chancellor and Vice President/CEO of USF Sarasota-Manatee, welcomed the attendees to the campus and Eileen Rodriguez, Regional Director of the SBDC at the University of South Florida in Tampa, presided over the event. Dr. Jack Crocker, Vice President of Academic Quality and Success of the State College of Florida also welcomed everyone. Congressman Buchanan addressed the federal small business issues of particular interest to the Small Business Committee, and the congressman stood for Q&A from the supportive crowd.

Florida Network staff used fifteen specific small business votes from the 110th Congress’ second session to determine the Dividend$ Award winner.  In its 9th year, the award was previously presented to Ileana Ros-Lehtinen 2008, John Mica 2007, Bill Nelson 2006, Ander Crenshaw 2004, Bob Graham 2003, Bill Young 2002, Connie Mack 2001 and Andy Ireland 2000.

The Florida SBDC Network, a statewide service network of 35 centers, is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration, hosted by the University of West Florida and accredited through the national Association of SBDCs. For over 30 years, the Network has nourished a statewide partnership between higher education and economic development organizations and has been dedicated to providing emerging and established business owners with assistance, enabling overall growth and increased profitability for the businesses and economic prosperity for the state.
