HX5 Accomplishes Phenominal Growth With PTAC Support
3 Employees to 50 and Company Revenue Over $7 Million

“We recognize that as a direct result of
Laura Subel's support, HX5 was granted the 8(a) certification, awarded its first 8(a) contract and has successfully secured additional contracts from the government,” said Margie Howard. “PTAC is an
integral part of our continued success.”

Established in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 2004 by Margie Howard, HX5 provides professional technical, management, and business solution services designed for the federal government, state government, and private industry. HX5, a small disadvantaged business with a female CEO, had small annual revenue figures for the first three years in business.

In 2007, Howard met with Laura Subel, the Florida SBDC Network’s Procurement Technical Assistance (PTAC) State Program Manager, for assistance with the application for 8(a) certification. Due in large part to Subel’s assistance, Howard successfully applied for and obtained 8(a) certification in a timely manner. As soon as HX5 became a certified 8(a) business, the firm received a $3.5 million service contract from the Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Although Howard, HX5 President and CEO, had over 20 years experience supporting government and commercial organizations, Subel enhanced the understanding of specific small business programs and opportunities such as HUBZone and Veteran initiatives. She also provided continuing one-on-one counseling for issues that surfaced while doing business with federal, state and local governments.

In 2007, HX5 had 3 employees; in 2009, it has 50 employees with potential for expanded employment opportunities. In 2007, company revenues were $103,903; in 2008 revenues increased to over $2 million; and in 2009 revenues were expected to increase significantly. As a result of the 8(a) certification and Subel’s assistance, HX5 accomplished this phenomenal growth within a year of its 8(a) certification, and they have continued to obtain government contracts.

"Laura Subel’s assistance is described as 'immeasurable' and her contributions are 'instrumental' to the success that HX5 has achieved," said Howard.

HX5 is currently performing on several government contracts, and since receiving 8(a) certification, their total current contract awards are over $7 million. Howard believes that their success is a direct result of the tremendous assistance received from PTAC.
