"“The reason I sought out the help of the SBDC was I knew I was on to something but, I wasn’t sure how to make it all work. Fortunately, I found Chris Workman at the SBDC and he helped me think through what I needed to do to take my work to the next level”, said Joe. “Whenever I reach a hurdle that I can’t get over myself I turn to Chris and he comes through for me by helping me discover what I need to do to make things work”."

Joe Mizereck has always been a strong supporter of the value of education. After experiences as a teacher, President of the Southern Scholarship Foundation, Director of Grants Development for the Florida Department of Education, and Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida’s Community College System most would have called it a career but Joe had another plan in mind. Joe was fully aware of the tremendous challenges that exist in education and the extraordinary need for funding to meet them. His answer was to establish www.GrantsAlert.com as part of his corporation, Joseph B. Mizereck & Associates, Inc. Through this site he provides teachers, schools, and related organizations free access to announcements of corporate, foundation, state and federal education funding opportunities. For educators without the time or experience to prepare their proposals, the site also provides a directory of grant writers. With the site launched and growing, Joe requested a counseling appointment with the Florida A&M University SBDC to discuss marketing. He met with Certified Business Analyst, Chris Workman, and some actions were discussed to promote the growth of the business. The SBDC working with the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University also identified the business as a potential candidate for MBA student assistance and in April of 2006 he received written reports containing strategic management recommendations from the student teams. Throughout 2006 and into 2007, Joe continued to work with the SBDC on areas such as proposal development, pricing approaches, and franchising strategies. Today, GrantsAlert is one of the highest rated education funding sites in the United States. Since April of 2005 page site access visits have gone from 12,000 per month to 25,000 and the site registers, on average, 821,000 hits per month. Joe’s next step is to develop a network of 50 state sites e.g., floridagrantsalert.com that will offer local and state funding alerts. After that? “I’m thinking and I’ll need to talk with Chris,” said Joe.
